Table Type

This table is the result of an experimental typography project. The project was to combine something that I liked, enjoyed and was good at with typography. In high school I took two years of wood shop before dropping it for design courses. My idea was to combine these two specialties. The main question that occurred during this process was how to incorporate typography into the design. I found several ways to do this. First are the decorative rails, which were cut out on a band saw and sanded to shape. These rails spell out COFFEE, TEA and POP all stained in a color which represents that beverage. It's a coffee table so beverages was the simple way to incorporate typography, not very experimental. The table top, tray and coasters is where the true experimentation comes into play. To cover the tops of all of these surfaces, I used the pages out of old books and layered them down, overlaying each other and working in different directions, my favorites to work with were the dictionary pages. The coasters were then coated in a lacquer to make them waterproof. The Tray was given a 1/8 inch thick acrylic resin over-top of the pages to create a lighter surface to place drinks and pitchers as opposed to glass. For the table itself, i took book spines and, using whole spines, created a narrative. I used cut up spines to then fill in excess space. The table was completed with a piece of glass placed over-top of the book spines. The Narrative: A Ruling Passion, Eleanor the Queen, Dancing in the Glory of Monsters. The Serpent, the Color of Death, Clear and present Danger, The Strong Men Pray for a Brave Heart. Beyond this Place, the Home on the Beach, House of sand and Fog, Our man in Havana, a Runaway Rebel. Forbidden Area, Caribbean Red Storm Rises The Tall Ships Speak to the Wind, The Wind of the Forest. Strange but True Cause of Death, The Golden Journey.

The book spines on the table's top provide a short narrative.
