Letterpress
Several projects set and printed in both wood and metal type; coasters, Christmas cards, postcards and prints. The Coasters were a series of six characters from the old 8 and 16-bit Mario games, printed in two-color red and black, similarly to the old-school graphics of the games. The “pixels” are decorative glyphs to bring in more character to the prints. The postcard is set wood type, overprinted to create a compass rose. As an Eagle Scout I wanted to print something that connected to me, and I enjoy orienteering, or using a map and compass to navigate. I enjoy the challenge and he aesthetic of it all. 0’s and V’s set and rotated to create the image through typography. The Christmas Cards were hand drawn and refined digitally by me and sent out to get a cut of the image. Using typography and ornamentation to fill the form of a deer, I printed the cards on red card stocks in silver and gold, keeping the Christmas colors without using the red and green color scheme. The prints in gold and silver are of a varsity style ampersand. Using a cut out form, it was filled with type, trying to keep it as structured and symmetrical as possible. The tag line is actually the basis for the word ampersand. It’s an old English saying “and, per say and, which was slurred and shortened to the term we use today.
